The Last Drop of Summer
what a beauty! looks like a perfect rose
The first week of September has been warm one. The temperatures have been in the high eighties. Too hot for some, but the mosquitos and ticks are gone. I have been enjoying the warmth. I know it is about to leave us for the next 6 or 7 months, so
I am squeezing every last drop out of summer.
what's cookin'?
August is my favorite month. It isn't rainy. The bright blue sky sets off the green trees at the edge of the meadow. The grass isn't growing so fast. There is more time to swim, bike, play. Come evening, it's time to relax in the screen porch and watch the does and fawns venture out to graze. Maybe see a rabbit makes a dash for the garden (hoping the dog doesn't spot her). The flowers sway in the breeze. The setting sun lights up flower petals in vivid reds, oranges, and pinks. It's magical.

The garden is in its prime. We enjoy fresh vegetable at every meal.
The kitchen is busy with pickles, relish, and apple jelly. Whatever is cooking, it always smells good.
In September harvesting begins. The freezer and root cellar will fill up. Then the garden needs to be readied for winter with straw and mulch. It's the last chance to hang out the bedding and wash the windows before snow falls. No wonder I enjoy August, the real work hasn't begun yet!
So I am going to squeeze the last drop of summer out of September and pretend August lasted for five weeks.
Maybe next year, if I am lucky, August will last 6 weeks.
