I paint small elements in nature found just out the back door, in the meadow, near the pond, down the road—past the bank of bracken ferns, near the Queen Anne's lace, or by the grove of wild apple trees. I hope that anyone who look's though my work will come away with the feeling that we enjoyed a walk together through the woods.

Woodland ferns — a watercolor clip art set.
The wildflowers had started sprouting in the woodland and I was looking to capture the likeness of some trout lilies. Then, spring was buried by a foot of late season snow. The trout lilies had to wait. But the ferns had survived! The woodland fills with ferns every year and I love watching them uncurl in the springtime. There is a long bank of ferns right before I get to the hemlock grove on my walk through the woods. By fall, the ferns can be over 4 feet tall.
With that late spring snow I decided to paint the friendly little fern leaves, already full of the bright greens of spring. I combined them with a variety of other findings from the forest floor that I gathered while walking along the woods road. This kept me busy until the wildflowers bloomed. Fern leaves make a great filler in more ways than one!
